These 5 Steps Form the Quickest Route to your Destination.

1. Know what you’re looking for.

And that means know the results you want to see from adding this person to your lineup. A good candidate will want to know what the performance objectives are upfront and why you want to fill the position. If you share a compelling vision of growth and opportunity then you have the ears of the top talent. If you explain that you’re backfilling the spot then you have … well … something else.

2. Referrals, Referrals, Referrals.

Nearly all of the best people find their jobs through some referral or recruitment. If you want into the passive pool of talent where the good stuff is, you need access and that means you should think about working with a recruiter, a good one who understands your industry and has a track record they can share. You’ll use this recruiter for talent as well as insight into how your industry is changing.

3. Delegate the leg work.

Going through a slush pile of resumes will lead to you making a bad decision out of exhaustion, exasperation, etc. If your recruiter can’t select the best from the pile of resumes, get another recruiter.

4. No flogging of the lifeless horse.

If the first few candidates you meet are way off the mark, figure out the problem before seeing any more. Again, get some help from your recruiter and find out what’s wrong about what you’re asking for. Maybe the title doesn’t make sense or the salary is off. Get some insight before the process wears you down.

5. Compete on your brand, not your money.

This means show pride in your work environment. Let the candidates know that they would be joining an elite crew. The types of people that prefer this over money are the ones you want.
