Social Media for the Job Hunter

May 10, 2016

Now that Social channels are separating out by function with some overlap, it’s more clear how to use social media to create a brand for yourself. And that brand can help you get noticed by people who can forward your career. Let’s break down how to use those channels.

Fast becoming the channel of choice for savvy job seekers. You can reach out to some really influential people and on a platform that really helps flatten the top-down structures that might inhibit your connection with these people in a corporate space. You don’t need to be on constantly, in fact it’s best if you’re not. On your calendar set aside an hour per week (minimum) where you can post articles and do the maintenance you need to foster relationships.

Low maintenance, but high profile. This is the accepted channel for career pursuits, so it will be the one you expect everyone to see. The good news is that you just have to keep it current and make sure that you respond to any requests you get from former colleagues. Obviously you can feel free to avoid the spammers.

The big thing with Facebook is avoiding the really embarrassing stuff that can make you seem risky to employers. So that means keeping up on permissions so no one can tag you in any embarrassing shots, but hopefully you know all this stuff already.

While you probably can’t get rid of Facebook, this is the channel you can lose if you want to trim your social presence. That doesn’t mean you have to, but if it starts feeling overwhelming. Snapchat is fun, but that’s about where it ends.

Keep in mind if you leave any of these channels it’s best to say a little goodbye and explain simply that you haven’t been using it and maybe how people can get a hold of you. It’s best not to ghost in case a prospective employer researches the channel without having a clear idea of when you dropped off. Maybe this would seem obvious but it’s best to tie up all that you can so it’s easier for folks to find out the stuff you want them to find out about you.
